5-year-old girl is Baltimore's 300th homicide victim of the year

Police are investigating the 300th homicide of the year in the city of Baltimore. The victim is a 5-year-old girl.

On Monday evening, officers responded to a home for an unresponsive child.

When they arrived, the officers tried to save Nivea Anderson's life. Medics arrived at the home soon after and Anderson was transported to a nearby children's hospital. Doctors pronounced her dead a short time later. Anderson had bruising on her face from prior abuse, Baltimore Police Department said.

Community leader and Pastor Cleveland Mason reacted to what he believes is the psychological assault of 300 people being killed year after year in the city.

"Unfortunately, some of us are getting to the point where we’re accepting this as normal — it’s not normal. Day after day it’s getting worse and it’s getting worse, and if our leadership does not step up to make it better, we will simply hand over our city to the criminal element and the criminal element will rule. It cannot happen," he said.
